The man accused of committing deed fraud to steal a Schoharie County man’s home has been indicted on grand larceny charges.

Joseph Goodnough allegedly knocked on the door of David White in Cobleskill and asked to buy his house. White eventually agreed and signed tax transfer papers.

White was eventually served an eviction notice and told to get out of his house.

A Schenectady County grand jury handed up the indictment on Thursday. The alleged crime was committed in Schenectady. Goodnough met White on June 29, 2023 at a Stewart’s Shops on Broadway to complete the transaction, according to court documents.

White had told NewsChannel 13’s Kumi Tucker exclusively previously that Goodnough handed over him the papers very quickly and says he never had a chance to look through things thoroughly.

The second grand larceny charge is in connection with an incident on July 28, 2023. No further information was available about that crime.

No date has been scheduled for his arraignment.

Goodnough was scheduled to appear in Schenectady City Court on Friday, but that appearance canceled because of the new indictment.

Attorney James Sottile, who is representing White in a civil lawsuit, said that case is proceeding to trial.

Sottile believes there are many victims.

“This isn’t the first time Goodnough has done this,” he said.

Goodnough’s attorney, Arthur Frost, did not immediately return a message seeking comment on Friday. He told NewsChannel 13 previously that his client was looking for a house for his teenage daughter and said White was about to lose the house for delinquent taxes. Goodnough paid a fair price. White voluntarily signed a deed to transfer the property, which was notarized, according to Frost.
