Mixed reactions over possible changes to Catholic schools
Parents at All Saints Catholic Academy in Albany are outraged over a possible change to their child’s school.
Parents from the school told NewsChannel 13 that an email want sent out to them from The Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany that said there will be a meeting on Feb. 25 about the future of three catholic Albany Schools under their portfolio.
Parents said All Saints Catholic Academy, Blessed Sacrament, and Mater Christi all now under the threat of facing of major change as early as this fall. All of those three schools are currently pre-K through eight grade.
The All-Saints Catholic Academy PTO said they have learned Diocese is considering not having all the schools be Pre-K through 8th Grade anymore and instead splitting the grades up. For example, making one of the schools 6th through 8th grade. The PTO said another thing they believe Diocese is considering is shutting down one of the three schools.
Parents said this would change everything for them and their children.
“So, when we saw the letter, there was a little bit of a panic because, again, we chose All Saints because it was a K-8 building and we love the idea of our daughters being together. We both have to be at work early in the morning, and so we can do one drop off and it makes our life much easier as a family,” one parent said.
Diocese providing in a statement to NewsChannel 13 that “Currently all three schools are Pre-K through 8th grade. The plan is for the three schools to work together and it’s already happening. Resources are being shared between the three schools now.”
Diocese went on to say “any recommendations must go before the Diocesan School Board and the Bishop who will make the final decision. The collaboration between the three schools so far has demonstrated that we can be better together.”
