Mother, 12-day infant son killed in Bennington County fire

Mother, 12-day infant son killed in New Year's Day in fire Sandgate in Bennington County.

A mother and her 12-day-old son have been identified as the victims of a fatal fire on New Year’s Day in Bennington County. 

Nicole Grogan, 22, and her son Oliver Stratton died in the fire at 1337 Chunks Brook Road in the town of Sandgate.

Firefighters responded around 11:30 a.m. for a report of a structure fire with entrapment. Grogan and Oliver were found dead inside.

The cause and manner of their deaths is pending.

Three other people were injured. Two of the victims of the fire are still in the hospital. A third person was in a different part of the residence and treated and released for injuries not related to the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by Vermont State Police, the Vermont Department of Public Safety Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit, and the Vermont Division of Fire Safety.

A GoFundMe has been started for the family to pay for funeral expenses and medical bills.
