Some National Grid customers have recently noticed a special tariff surcharge on their bills from National Grid, causing confusion among many.

A viewer asked if this surcharge was related to recent federal actions.

National Grid clarified that the surcharge has been in place for years and is not connected to federal tariffs. Instead, it stems from local taxes, which can be imposed by counties or towns on the utility company for the use of their infrastructure such as poles, wires, and pipes. Residents in areas with this surcharge may find their local tax rates contributing to their bills, resulting in different amounts owed compared to other municipalities.

While it may seem concerning, the surcharge is generally a minor addition to bills, typically amounting to just a few dollars, National Grid said.
