Your gas and electric bills could soon see a steep hike, unless state lawmakers step in.

National Grid submitted a new rate plan to state legislators that would increase the average person’s utility bill by nearly $40 a month.

The company asked for a 15% increase in electricity rates, and 20% for natural gas.

The requested increases would take effect next year if the Public Service Commission approves them.
