New law requires nursing homes to post ratings

Nursing homes must post ratings

Nursing homes must post ratings under a new law that took effect on Friday.

A new law to improve transparency in nursing home care has taken effect.

The law requires nursing homes to prominently display their most recent star ratings for health inspections, staffing and quality measures as determined by the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

The rating must be posted in the facility, as well as on its website and the website of the parent company, according to Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara, D-Rotterdam, who sponsored the legislation.

“Navigating the decision to place a loved one in a nursing home is an emotional and challenging process,” Santabarbara said in a statement. “This legislation ensures that families have clear, accurate, and accessible information to help them choose the best possible care for their loved ones. Transparency and accountability are essential in providing peace of mind during such critical decisions.”
