Hochul calls for constitutional amendment to abolish Electoral College
There was another step taken in the process to officially elect the 47th president of the United States, but not without question from New York State Gov. Kathy Hochul, who is calling for an amendment to the United States Constitution. She is asking for the popular vote to decide our president, and not the Electoral College.
Here in New York State, the 60th general proceedings of the electoral college took place at the State Capitol in Albany.
Presidential electors gathered to certify their electors, and cast the state’s Electoral College votes for Kamala Harris.
However, Gov. Hochul said it’s time for change.
“For the electoral college, that time has come. Unfairly, less populated states have outsized influence, and in effect, the votes of their residents count more than the residents of a state like New York,” said Hochul. “I strongly believe that the people of New York state and the United States of America, should and must have their votes count equally, and that the popular vote should prevail.
Trump won both the popular vote and Electoral College in 2024. He lost the popular vote in 2016, but he won the Electoral College.
