NY attorney general among 14 other attorneys general suing TikTok
New York State Attorney General Letitia James is suing TikTok. It’s part of a bipartisan coalition of 14 attorneys general who are suing.
The social media platform is harming children’s mental health, according to James’ office.
TikTok misleads the public about the safety of its platform, they said.
The lawsuits allege TikTok violated state laws by falsely claiming its platform is safe for young people. It also accuses the social media platform of collecting the data of young people without their consent.
The lawsuits are calling for a change to TikTok’s “harmful features.”
TikTok has faced legal troubles several times dating back to 2019.
The platform, known as Musical.Ly at the time, agreed to pay $5.7 million to settle a children’s privacy case. Those allegations came from the Federal Trade Commission.
President Joe Biden signed a bill this April that would ban TikTok, if ByteDance, its parent company, doesn’t sell it within a year. Less than a month later, TikTok sued the government over the potential ban, calling it unconstitutional.
The Department of Justice sued both TikTok and ByteDance last August for allegedly violating the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act.
That case went before a panel of judges just last month.
