NY attorney general recuses herself from inmate death case
New York Attorney General Letitia James is recusing herself from the investigation into the death of an inmate at Marcy Correctional Facility.
Fourteen correction officers are currently under investigation in the beating death of inmate Robert Brooks.
Attorney General James said her office is removing itself from the investigation due to a potential conflict of interest, as four of the correction officers in this case are currently defendants in other cases represented by lawyers in the Attorney General’s Office.
“This decision was made with the utmost respect for the integrity of this investigation, and we will ensure that there will not be any delays,” James said. “It is critically important that justice is served. This decision ensures that it will be.”
James also expressed her condolences to Brooks’ family, calling it an “unimaginable” and “difficult” time.
The Onondaga County District Attorney will now serve as a special prosecutor in the Marcy prison death case.
