The Lunar New Year is now a holiday public schools observe in New York.
The Chinese New Year on Wednesday was an historic day for New York state.
It was the first time public school students had the day off to celebrate the holiday.
Gov. Kathy Hochul signed legislation back in 2023 declaring Lunar New Year a school holiday.
Hochul has previously said it’s part of her commitment to support and protect New York’s Asian American Pacific Islander community.
Meanwhile, crowds flocked to the Empire State Plaza to celebrate.
Learn about the celebration by watching the video of Tessa Bentulan’s story.
