Pair from Philmont allegedly stole cash, food stamp benefits from elderly victim

Two people from Philmont are accused of stealing cash and food stamp benefits from an elderly person.

State Police said Samantha Mowris, 46, was working as a home health aide for the victim. After the person was placed into a nursing home last September, Mowris fraudulently wrote a series of checks on the victim’s bank account, police said. That resulted in a theft of more than $2,200.

Mowris also allegedly used the victim’s food stamp card to buy nearly $700 worth of items at various stores.

Christopher Nardone, 43, is accused of cashing forged checks from the victim’s bank account.

Mowris is facing 13 counts including grand larceny, burglary, possession of a forged instrument, identity theft, falsify business records, identity theft and conspiracy.

Nardone was charged with possession of a forged instrument, petit larceny and conspiracy.

Mowris and Nardone were arraigned in Greenport Town Court and are due back in court on March 17.
