Phone scam uses fake parking tickets, tolls to trick people

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office is warning people about a scam that aims to steal personal information by tricking people into thinking they are paying a parking ticket or toll fee.

Scammers send a text claiming the person has an unpaid parking ticket, E-ZPass fee or toll fee. The text provides a link to NYC Citypay, which brings up a fake website that looks real. The site requests personal information such as your name, date of birth, driver’s license number or credit or debit card number, which can lead to identity theft, according to police.

People are advised to be suspicious of any unsolicited text message or email requesting money or personal information.

You can call the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office dispatch center at 518-853-5500 if you’re unsure about a call or a text.
