State orders release of misconduct report at PHS

A long-awaited report into alleged faculty misconduct at Pittsfield High School is expected to be made public soon, marking a potential turning point in the district’s push for transparency and accountability.

The Massachusetts Public Records Division has ordered Pittsfield Public Schools to release a redacted version of the investigative report, which had been withheld following the 2023 arrest of former Dean of Students Lavante Wiggins on federal drug charges. The decision comes after local parent Ciara Batory filed a formal appeal when the district initially denied her request for records.

State officials ruled that the district’s reasoning for keeping the report under wraps did not outweigh the public’s right to know. The Pittsfield School Committee now has 10 business days to respond to the order. Committee Chair William Cameron confirmed that the matter will be discussed in an executive session during tonight’s meeting and that an executive summary of the report is being prepared.

Batory hailed the ruling as a “win for transparency” in taxpayer-funded institutions.

Tonight’s committee meeting is also expected to be one of the most consequential of the year. On the agenda: a vote on the district’s proposed $86.9 million budget, which includes reallocating $100,000 from technology to improve district communications and support the planned replacement of Crosby and Conte elementary schools.

In addition, the committee will finalize interview questions for candidates seeking to become interim superintendent, as current Superintendent Joseph Curtis is set to step down on July 1. The committee may also vote to ratify a new three-year contract with the United Educators of Pittsfield, pending approval by the union.
