Pittsfield School Committee hires a law firm to investigate scandals

Pittsfield School Commitee approves hiring investigators amid scandals

This comes after recent scandals at Pittsfield High School. In one the scandals, the dean was arrested.

The Pittsfield School Committee met Monday evening in the wake of scandals that have placed three administrators from the Pittsfield High School on leave.

Lavante Wiggins, dean of students at the high school, was arrested earlier this month on a charge of conspiracy to distribute and possession with intent to distribute cocaine.

Two other administrators have been placed on leave – Molly West, another deans of students, and Vice Principal Alison Shepard – in a separate matter from the Wiggins case. Shepard and West were placed on leave in connection with an investigation by the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families.

A student is also suing former English teacher Robert Barsanti for sexual harassment. Among allegations in the lawsuit, is that Barsanti asked her if she wanted to go into a janitor’s closet with him.

The committee voted to hire Springfield-based law firm Bulkley Richardson at Monday’s meeting.

Buckley Richardson was picked do the investigation from multiple recommendations from different attorneys including the school’s attorney.

The firm “will conduct a limited series of interviews of key witnesses, in particular of each of the individuals name herein, and anyone else who has or purports to have actual knowledge of what has been alleged against greater former Pittsfield High School administrators or educators,” said a school committee member.

The deadline for the investigation to be completed is March 31, 2025. The committee expects it be finished earlier than then.

The committee also hopes to have a second investigation, which has not been introduced yet. It will be an audit of HR practices with a separate firm.
