A student at Pownal Elementary School in Bennington County brought a 9mm handgun and 67 rounds of ammunition to school on Wednesday, according to police.

The Bennington County Sheriff’s Department said that the student had sent a message about what they were doing on social media. Students who saw the message notified their teachers.

The student was removed from class and the gun and ammunition were found in his backpack and removed.

Police said it was the students’ quick thinking that helped stop a bad situation before anyone got hurt. There is no further danger to the school.

Police said this is a reminder that if people see something concerning, they should say something.

The school district said in a letter to parents that counselors will be available to staff in students on Thursday if they need to discuss their concerns.

Parents are debating on whether they should send their kids to school on Thursday.

“I have tossed it around and I know a lot of other parents had tossed it around about not sending their child to school tomorrow. I personally think the schools should be closed tomorrow,” said one parent.

The Southwest Vermont Supervisory Union and Pownal Elementary School administration said it cannot comment about the students involved or the investigation.
