Police: Boy, 13, left gun in park near Albany school
A 13-year-old student was arrested Wednesday morning for allegedly leaving a loaded gun in a park near North Albany Middle School.
School staff notified police around 9:10 a.m. that they found a handgun on a retaining wall directly across the street in the park, which the school uses as a recess area, Albany Police said. Officers recovered the 9mm handgun.
Police said that school staff observed one of the students in the immediate area where the handgun was found before the school day started.
The student left the park and entered the school. At that time, he did not have the gun, according to police.
He was arrested without incident. The gun was reported stolen by the Atlanta Police Department.
The student, whose name is not being released because of his age, has been charged with two counts of criminal possession of a weapon and one count of criminal possession of stolen property. He was arraigned in Albany County Family Court and placed under home confinement and will be monitored using an electronic monitoring device.
