Increased DWI patrols on roads for holidays

Increased DWI patrols on roads for sobriety checkpoints during the holiday season.

State Police and local enforcement agencies will be watching for impaired drivers during the holiday season.

The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign began on Wednesday, Dec. 11, and will continue through Jan. 1. Police also will be watching for speeding and distracted drivers as well as people violating the “Move Over Law,” which requires motorists to exercise caution when passing any vehicle stopped in or on the side of the road.

During last year’s crackdown, law enforcement statewide issued 106,509 tickets. There were 20,633 tickets for speeding, 1,027 for distracted driving, 2,537 were for seatbelts, 597 for the “Move Over Law” and 3,030 individuals were arrested for impaired driving.

The campaigns are funded by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee.

People are encouraged to designate a sober driver when celebrating. There is also the “Have a Plan” mobile app, which lets New Yorkers to locate and call a taxi or rideshare service and program a designated driver list.
