Police discover two illegally-immigrated men in Rensselaer, one charged on several felony accounts
The Rensselaer Police Department charged 32-year-old Carlos Omar Garcia-Hernandez on various felony accounts having to do with stealing property, trespass, and other illegal actions.
On July 30 around 9:37 a.m., Rensselaer Police received a call for two males carrying weedwhackers, backpacks, and one suitcase, entering yards and knocking on doors in the area of 3rd Avenue and High Street.
Garcia-Hernandez, one of the two men, was fingerprinted and discovered to have an outstanding warrant for felony drug possession out of New Mexico, said police.
Authorities say it was after further investigation that him and the other man, Jimmy Mauricio Chancusig Quilumba, 24, were in possession of stolen property taken from at least three separate locations.
Police say Quilumba had an identification card issued out of New York City, as well as a passport.
Garcia-Hernandez had tickets for an Amtrak train going from New York City to Portland, Oregon in his possession. said Rensselaer Police.
After Garcia-Hernandez’s identity was confirmed via fingerprint, the Department of Homeland Security Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) contacted Rensselaer Police.
Authorities say in addition, two deportation officers from Enforcement and Removal Operations responded to Rensselaer Police. Both men were found to be in the United States illegally; Garcia-Hernandez is from Mexico and Quilumba is from Ecuador.
Garcia-Hernandez was charged with the following:
- Second-degree burglary
- Third-degree criminal trespass
- Fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property
- Fourth-degree grand larceny
- Fourth-degree conspiracy
- Fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon (non-citizen)
- Fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property
- Sixth-degree conspiracy
- Petit larceny
