Pedestrian in Colonie crash identified

Police on Friday identified the man killed after he was struck by a car Tuesday night on Central Avenue through his fingerprint.

The crash occurred just after 6 p.m. Mark Schimmer, 67, was pushing a shopping cart in the area of Central Avenue and Mountain View Avenue. Police do not know what direction he was walking. Schimmer was wearing dark clothing and was not near a crosswalk or a traffic signal. Visibility was poor because of rain and snow, police said.

The 33-year-old driver struck Schimmer and stopped to call 911. He was treated at the scene by Colonie Ems and then transported to Albany Medical Center, where he died from his injuries. Speed and intoxication are not factors in the crash and there are no charges.

Police said they couldn’t find a current address for Schimmer. He was identified through a fingerprint on file with the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office in Arizona also assisted in the investigation. Schimmer lived there for a time in the 1990s and 2000s, Colonie Police said.

If anyone witnessed the crash or has information, they are asked to contact the Colonie Police Traffic Safety Unit at 518-783-2744.
