Police: Man who stole ambulance was under influence of drugs
The man accused of stealing an ambulance in Cobleskill and crashing it in Schenectady was under the influence of drugs, according to police.
EMS workers were responding to a report of a diabetic person around 10:15 p.m. on Saturday. Adam C. Cole, 25, allegedly told them that there was a second medical emergency nearby. When they exited the ambulance to load in the patient, police said Cole took off.
Cole led investigators on a chase. At one point, he left the patient out at a gas station, but kept driving. The chase continued east on I-88 and police said Cole was driving in the wrong lane for a time.
The chase ended after Cole crashed into a 1988 Nissan at Eastern and Brandywine avenues.
The driver of the Nissan, Jesus Espinal Jr., 24, of Utica, was taken to Albany Medical Center. An update on his condition was not available.
Police told NewsChannel 13 on Tuesday that Cole is being charged with assault, reckless endangerment and criminal possession of stolen property. He is also ticketed for drugged driving.
Cole is due back in court at a later date.
He also had an active warrant on a grand larceny charge out of Schenectady County. He remains in Schenectady County Jail.
