A New Jersey man is facing charges for allegedly trying to scam a Colonie resident out of $40,000.
The victim was attempting to dispute an online purchase made through Etsy when her phone call was forwarded to the suspect. Dhruv P. Patel, 33, of Franklin Park, is accused of posing as a member of the Federal Trade Commission in a phone call. Patel told the resident that his name was “Patrick” and he claimed that she was a victim of identity theft and should remove all funds from her bank accounts and turn them over to him for safekeeping, Colonie Police said.
The resident contacted her family members who told her to report this to police.
Investigators encouraged her to make arrangements for Patrick to retrieve the money at her residence. Police were there to meet and arrest Patel when he came to collect the money.
Patel was charged with attempted grand larceny and scheme to defraud. He was arraigned in Colonie Town Court and released on his own recognizance.
The investigation is continuing and police are asking anyone who believe they may be a victim to contact 518-783-2754. Anonymous tips can also be submitted by calling Capital Region Crimestoppers at 1-833-ALB-TIPS or go to capitalregioncrimestoppers.com.
