Power has been restored for residents in the Village of Green Island following a 9-hour long outage on Wednesday.

The village said the power went out around noon Wednesday and came back on shortly after 9 p.m.

The village said about all of the 3,000 residents in the village were affected by the outage.

Temperatures ranged from the 20s to 30s on Wednesday and led to residents’ homes becoming bitter cold.

“I have electric heat and when the electric heat is not working the house gets really cold. And I thought it could outstand it, but the house kept getting colder and colder,” said one resident.

National Grid supplies power to the Green Island Power Authority and National Grid said the outage was due to a downed power line from the weather.

The Village of Green Island opened up their community center to the public at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday so residents could warm up.

“We thought it was in the best interest and the resonance to open our community center, to give them an opportunity to come in, to get warm, to charge their electronics,” said a spokesperson from the village.
