Report: Albany’s new school zone cameras hand out nearly 13,000 tickets

Over 13,000 speeding tickets issued after school zone cameras installed

That staggering number is for tickets issued in a three week period. The first few cameras went live on October 7.

Albany’s new school zone speed cameras have issued over 13,000 tickets in just three weeks.

The $50 fines are given to people going at least 10 miles over the 20 miles per hour speed limit.

“Let’s be honest, everyone has sped at some point in their life. I have sped in school zones I’m sure…but to have it this consistent and this much is really kind of astonishing,” Darius Shahinfar said.

Shahinfar is the Albany City Treasurer said his department issues the tickets. The Albany City Common Council came up with the idea to install school zone cameras.

“The council felt they really needed to take this measure to really enforce the law to supplement police enforcement by doing cameras enforcement.”

The camera are live every school day from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Shahinfar said 13,556 tickets were issued for going 11 MPH over the speed limit.

Of those, 9365 were going 11-15 MPH over, 3,343 were going 16-20 MPH over, 848 were going 21 MPH+ over the speed limit, including 17 over 30 MPH over the limit with a high of one idiot driving 63 MPH in a school zone.

here are many repeat offenders, some as few as 2 tickets, with one having 29 thus far.

“People aren’t paying attention to the signs that have been there well before speeding cameras were introduced,” Shahinfar said.

The City of Albany plans to have cameras added to 16 more school zones in the not too distant future. This adds up to a total of 40 cameras.
