Report: Rep. Elise Stefanik exploring gubernatorial run

Republican U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik may be considering a run for New York governor. People around the state, Republican donors and those close to President Donald Trump are encouraging her to seek the nomination, NBC News reports.

Republican U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik may be considering a run for New York governor.

People around the state, Republican donors and those close to President Donald Trump are encouraging her to seek the nomination, NBC News reports.

Stefanik was up to be ambassador to the United Nations, as part of the Trump Administration. However, President Trump pulled the nomination so Republicans wouldn’t risk losing a seat in Congress if an election was held to replace her.

Current New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, is up for re-election in 2026.

A Marist poll found that 39% of people approved of the job Hochul is doing, and 57% of residents statewide do not want her to run for re-election.
