Saratoga County Sheriff Michael Zurlo releases statement on latest threats on Capital Region schools
The Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office says they are aware of a series of online threats shared among several school districts in the Capital Region recently.
The Sheriff’s Office says that none of these threats were found to be credible.
Sheriff Michael Zurlo released the following statement on the threats:
“One of the biggest issues we’re dealing with is that of reposting versus reporting. Instead of reporting an online threat to the police, we’re finding that some people are reposting the threat. While perhaps well-intentioned, this increases our workload exponentially, can have us chasing down leads that don’t need
to be chased and take us away from the ones that do.”
The Office adds that they encourage parents and caregivers to discuss the concept of reposting versus reporting with their children.
They say any online threat, or any threat, should always be reported to police so that correct safety measures can be implemented immediately. They mention that reposting a threat online can create confusion, and could be potentially criminal in nature.
The Sheriff’s Office reminds people to abide by the mantra, despite the type of situation, “If you see something, say something.”
