Saratoga Springs gets new ‘temporary’ member of city council

Saratoga Springs is getting a new member of its city council.

NewsChannel 13 has learned that Hank Kuczynski, a former deputy mayor in Democrat Ken Klotz’s administration, was appointed to fill a portion of the term left unfulfilled when Jason Golub left Aug. 16 to take a job with New York state.

The council, which is made up of two Republicans and two Democrats, has been without a fifth and deciding member for more than two months.

The expectation, according to the city account’s commissioner Dillon Moran, is that Kuczynski will only fill the job until a special election is held.

As NewsChannel 13 has reported, the city wants to hold a special election on Jan. 28, but the Republican Saratoga County elections commissioner says no, because there’s no provision in state law to hold a special election for a local office.

The council is prepared to sue to make it happen, according to the city accounts commissioner.
