People in Saratoga Springs were voting for their new Commissioner of Public Works on Tuesday, as the race for this municipal office has gained a lot of attention.

As NewsChannel 13 reported last August, the city had opened applications for the vacancy left by former Commissioner Jason Golub. He resigned to take a job with the New York State Department of Corrections.

Saratoga Springs law requires the City Council to hold a special election. However, the Republican elections commissioner called that vote a “horrible idea” last October.

Two months later, the GOP took legal action to force that election.

The seat is currently held by Hank Kuczynski, who was appointed to the position in November. He is not on the ballot, but is running a write-in campaign.

Chuck Marshall is the Republican candidate.
