Schenectady lowers speed limit to 25 mph

The speed limit previously was 30 mph but is now 25 mph as of 3/1.

The speed limit in the City of Schenectady lowered their speed limit to 25 mph Saturday. The speed limit on city streets was previously 30 mph.

Schenectady Police said slowing down can not only reduce accidents and the seriousness of the accident but also overall improve pedestrian safety.

“I mean, I get it you’re trying to protect people, I understand. People do speed. I don’t think it’s going to change,” said one Schenectady resident.

This comes after Cohoes and Albany have lowered their speed limits to 25 mph in the past few months.

Even though the speed limit is changing there are some few exceptions on roads within city limits. Erie Boulevard and Maxon Road Extension will stay at 30 mph and State Street east of Feher Avenue will drop to 30 from its previous 35 mph.

“I’m going to go 25, but I mean, 25 means 30. That’s just really, on all actuality, that’s how I look at it,” one Schenectady resident said.

Our Zach Richter has been speaking with residents and will have the story tonight on NewsChannel 13 LIVE at 11.
