A Schenectady man is expected to receive 30 years in prison after pleading guilty on Monday to arson and rape charges.

Dakiem Demonia, 21, admitted in Schenectady County Court to three separate crimes that occurred in a weeklong period in the spring.

It began on May 27, when Demonia met a woman through a social media app and invited her to his apartment at 1315 Lower Broadway. After she arrived, he pulled a knife on her and forced her to engage in sex acts, according to the Schenectady County District Attorney’s Office.

The victim got away from him and ran into the street, where Good Samaritans heard the commotion and contacted police. Officers arrested Demonia at the scene.

Demonia then returned to the apartment building in the middle of the night on May 29 and set fire to it. He was upset about the landlord trying to evict him, according to prosecutors. Demonia left the scene before police arrived but was seen on security video. No one was hurt, but the building was damaged, which forced residents to relocate temporarily.

Demonia also admitted to threatening a woman he met the previous day with a knife if she did not perform sex acts in his car. She ran out of the car but then he pulled her to a wooded area of the park, choked her and sexually assaulted her. He also grabbed her purse and left the scene.

A passerby contacted the police. They later found Demonia’s genetic material on her leggings.

Police arrested Demonia on June 1 after they saw him walking down the street. He ran away but a K-9 was able to take him down and arrest him.

“It is clear to us that Mr. Demonia is a clear and present danger as a violent man repeatedly preying on women he encounters and willing to set fire to a home – endangering the lives of people sound asleep at the time. It was important to our office that he receive separate sentences for each of these violent crimes and that these sentences be consecutive to one another.”

Demonia will receive 10 years on each count of rape, attempted and arson for a total of 30 years when sentenced on Feb. 11.
