A Schoharie County man was sentenced on Wednesday to 8 years in prison for stealing $12,000 in items from a dead man’s home.
A jury convicted Patrick Corbett, of Broome, of second-degree burglary.
Corbett entered the man’s residence in Rensselaerville and took more than $12,000 worth of items at a home on Route 85 on Nov. 29, 2023, according to the Albany County District Attorney’s Office.
Investigators believe that Corbett knew the homeowner had died recently and broke in during the overnight hours. The burglary was captured on a trail camera set up outside the home.
The deceased homeowner’s relatives saw that the house had been ransacked when they visited. Five long guns, one handgun and an ATV were missing, along with several smaller items, according to prosecutors.
Corbett also must serve five years of post-release supervision.
