Self-proclaimed antiviolence activist back in court on sex charge

The self-proclaimed antiviolence activist who was convicted of weapons possession earlier this month was back in court on Wednesday for a different case.

Dontie Mitchell, 44, is charged with first-degree criminal sex act. Mitchell allegedly had forcible sexual contact with a victim between Nov. 26, 2021 and Feb. 1, 2022, according to the Albany County District Attorney’s Office. The alleged incident happened on Quail Street in Albany.

Mitchell was in case for a hearing seeking to get the indictment dismissed, according to the D.A.’s Office. There was no ruling on the matter.

Mitchell was acquitted on Dec. 9 of the top charge of attempted murder after a weeklong trial. The charge stemmed from a gun battle that happened in August 2023 in Cohoes that resulted in the death of Shieer Leggett.

Mitchell said he had gone to confront two of the youths he mentored because he said they were hanging out with members of the Bloods gang.

Mitchell was firing in the direction of Nalik Sealey, who admitted to firing the bullet that killed Leggett.
Mitchell is going to be sentenced on Feb. 13, 2025 on the gun charge.
