Six staff hurt in fight at Greene Correctional Facility

Five correction officers and a lieutenant were hurt in a large fight with inmates at Greene Correctional Facility over the weekend.
It happened on Saturday, according to New York State Correction Officers and Police Benevolent Association.
Inmate visits had ended in the Special Housing and Residential Rehabilitation Units at the medium security correctional facility. There were 20 inmates in the visitor area, when one inmate jumped up from his chair and began throwing punches with two other inmates, according to NYSCOPBA.
The lieutenant on duty ran to get help.
Officers grabbed the first inmate, put him in a body hold and forced him to the ground. Once in handcuffs, he complied. Another inmate began throwing chairs at other inmates, according to the union. He was placed in a body hold and forced to the floor, the union said.
A third inmate joined in the fray and threw chairs, which hit an officer in the arm. That inmate punched other inmates before being put in a body hold.
A fourth inmate threw a chair, striking a second officer. An officer saw an inmate trying to pick up a ceramic razor from the floor, but quickly stopped him and seized the weapon, the union said.
The inmates were removed from the visitor’s area and brought for evaluation. They will face disciplinary charges.
Five officers and one lieutenant were treated for knee, shoulder, elbow, hip, wrist, back and hand injuries.
