Deadly Colonie fire was started by smoking

Deadly Colonie fire was started by smoking materials on the porch that were not properly put out.

The fire that destroyed a Colonie home and killed three people was caused by smoking.

Town Supervisor Peter Crummey said that the fire at 4 Locust Park on Jan. 27 started on the front porch and was caused by smoking materials that were not properly extinguished.

There were a lot of flammable materials on the porch, according to a statement from Crummey. The fire started to spread in the house and hoarding conditions made it difficult to fight.

It killed husband-and-wife Timothy and Katelyn Ryan and Katie’s mom Lynne Lyons.

Two people managed to escape.
