State Republicans voice opposition to eviction bill backed by Democrats
Housing is at the top of the agenda when it comes to New York state budget negotiations.
Democrats have been pushing a massive housing deal, which includes the “Good Cause Eviction” bill, which would protect renters across New York.
The legislation would require landlords to justify evictions and rent hikes greater than 3%.
State Republicans voiced their opposition to the bill on Wednesday, saying it essentially provides tenancy for life.
“Good cause is nothing more than a direct attack on private property rights in this state,” said Republican Assemblyman Will Barclay. “That is the case because some of my colleagues simply do not believe in private property rights. They have actually said that you should not own any home, except the one you live in.”
The budget needs to include more incentives for new construction, and incentives to charge below the market rate, the group said.
