Stewart’s stops tap-to-pay option because of scammers

Stewart's Shops has stopped its tap-to-pay option because of scammers. The Times Union first reported that the scammers used counterfeit credit cards and purchased items using tap-to-pay, and the transactions went through as if they were legitimate.

Stewart’s Shops has stopped its tap-to-pay option at all of its stores, because of scammers.

A spokeswoman for Stewart’s Shops confirmed that the tap-to-pay was shut down on Oct. 21. There is a loophole in the software that allows scammers to use fake card information. It is part of a larger issue nationwide that has been going on for months.

The affected stores were in Greene, Orange and Ulster counties.

The company said there is a software bug, and no customer information is in jeopardy.

A software fix is coming, but Stewart’s Shops said it is not sure when tap-to-pay will return.

The Times Union was first to report the story.
