The website for applying is now up and running, but the program still may be taken down by legal challenges.

Now for the first time millions of Americans can log on to studentaid.gov and apply for debt relief. The department of education launched a beta test of its website ahead of the official rollout later this month.

Individuals who made less than $125,000 in the past two years and families that earned less than $250,000 are eligible. Debt cancellation can be as much as $10,000 per applicant or as much as $20,000 for Pell grant recipients.

Applications won’t be processed for weeks, but for many the promise of relief is now in sight.
