Tamara Tries: Snowboarding at Gore Mountain
For Tamara Tries, it was time to trade in the skis for a snowboard and hit the slopes at Gore Mountain, the largest ski area in New York State.
Gore Mountain offers a variety of trails and terrain for all skill levels, making it an ideal spot for both beginners and experienced riders. Ian Tomasch, Marketing Manager at Gore Mountain, emphasized the resort’s commitment to accessibility for all.
“So we are the largest ski area in New York State. But we have trails and terrains for all abilities and levels. So where we’re standing here by our learning areas with multiple trails of different difficulties and progressions to help everyone learn before they go out and explore the rest of the mountain,” said Tomasch.
And if you haven’t made it to the slopes yet, there’s still time! Gore Mountain plans to stay open through mid-to-late April as long as the snow sticks around.
The Right Way to Learn
While snowboarding is an exciting sport, experts warn that jumping in too quickly can lead to trouble. One of the biggest mistakes? Feeling pressured to ride before you’re ready.
Ted Arndt, a Snowboard Supervisor at Gore Mountain, often sees beginners who were encouraged by more experienced friends or family members to take on the slopes before learning the basics.
“That’s a lot of hill. Even in a small amount of time, I can get this buildup to 40 miles per hour. So you wanna make sure that you’re in control and that you’re increasing your ability at your own pace,” said Arndt. “I can’t say it enough: taking a lesson from a professional makes a world of difference. At Gore, we have an incredible staff … and all they want to do is share their love of snowboarding with you.”
Whether you’re looking to try something new or just squeeze in a few more runs before the season ends, now is the time. So grab your gear and hit the slopes—whether at Gore Mountain or another ski area nearby!
