Tamara Tries Alpaca Farming

A comprehensive look at local, statewide and national news events is provided by the NewsChannel 13 Team, along with updates on sports and the weather forecast.

Tucked away in the rolling hills of Washington County, just an hour north of Albany and near the Vermont border, Quarry Ridge Alpacas has been raising champion alpacas since 1998.

Initially, the farm focused on breeding, but the family-run farm has since expanded into the fiber arts—spinning fleece into cozy, handcrafted garments.

Every spring, these fluffy animals trade their winter coats for something much lighter, as shearing season begins.

According to the farm, for each alpaca, a fresh cut is given for comfort and health, and it’s a warm-weather makeover that also helps support the farm’s fiber business.

The fleece, renowned for its softness and warmth, is collected, sorted, and transformed into yarns and one-of-a-kind garments, providing a genuine farm-to-fashion experience.

From peaceful views to a hands-on experience, Quarry Ridge Alpacas continues to spin success from the ground up, proving that even in the mountains, comfort and craftsmanship can go hand in hand.

If you or someone would also like to meet the Alpacas and learn how to spin fibers, check out the Washington County Fiber Tour on Saturday and Sunday.
