Top Teacher: Kate Sedlak – Saratoga Catholic
Science is more than just a subject at Saratoga Catholic—it’s an adventure, thanks to the passion and creativity of earth science teacher Kate Sedlak. Known for her dynamic teaching style, Sedlak has earned the distinction of this week’s “Top Teacher,” an honor that comes as no surprise to her students.
Science can be challenging for many students, but Sedlak has a knack for making complex concepts accessible and engaging. From thrilling experiments to interactive projects, she ensures her students are not just learning about science but experiencing it firsthand.
“You know, it’s earth science, so it’s very hard, and it’s very hard to understand it. But in the end, she makes it fun,” said 10th-grade student Grace Schaefer.
Sedlak’s approach goes beyond textbooks and lectures—she fosters curiosity and encourages students to embrace learning as an adventure. Whether discussing how chemicals influence weather patterns or engaging students in group activities to explore tectonic plates, her classroom is anything but ordinary.
“You know, kids are kids. And they become adults. And their potential is always there. They don’t know what they want to be, but just to instill the love of learning and let them know that they can be whatever they want to be—that’s the goal,” Sedlak shared.
Students appreciate her dedication and the welcoming environment she creates.
“She’s a great teacher. She loves her students in every class that she teaches,” said Sandy McDonald, another 10th-grade student.
Sedlak takes pride in making her classroom a place where students feel excited to learn. “I always want to be the room you don’t dread coming to. So, they never quite know what they are going to do and are always up for it. And I always say to the kids, ‘Do you trust me?’ And they say, ‘Oh yeah!’ So, alright, let’s go!” she said with enthusiasm.
Her students were thrilled but not surprised when she was recognized as the Top Teacher. “She never lets us fall behind. She loves to keep us in class and loves teaching us,” McDonald added.
Schaefer echoed the sentiment: “I was so proud of her. She deserves this award tremendously. And I honestly feel like she’s one of the best teachers at this school.”
With her innovative approach and unwavering passion for teaching, Kate Sedlak is shaping the minds of future scientists, one experiment at a time.
