A comprehensive look at local, statewide and national news events is provided by the NewsChannel 13 Team, along with updates on sports and the weather forecast.

English class is more than just literature and essays for students at Goff Middle School. It’s a space for inspiration, confidence-building, and personal growth—thanks to this week’s News Channel 13’s Top Teacher, Monica Barnes.

Barnes, an eighth-grade English teacher, has dedicated years to shaping young minds. Her passion for teaching, however, began long before her time at Goff, rooted in a deep family tradition.

“I always loved English. It was my favorite subject in school,” Barnes shared. “My parents were both educators. My mom was an elementary school teacher for over 30 years, and my father was a social studies teacher who later became a principal.”

Growing up, she witnessed firsthand the impact her parents had on their students, a legacy that inspired her to follow in their footsteps.

“They were like celebrities in our neighborhood,” Barnes recalled. “We’d run into kids in the supermarket, and they would be so excited to see my parents. Seeing how much they influenced their students’ lives made me want to do the same.”

Barnes’ dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed. Her students describe her as an educator who goes the extra mile to ensure their success.

“This year, she puts more effort into her students,” said Kashmala Sahibzada, one of her students. “And I feel confident in English and writing.”

Another student, Sophia Cottrell, praised Barnes’ ability to make learning engaging. “She makes a lot of the lessons intriguing and finds a way to draw kids into it,” she said.

For Barnes, teaching isn’t just a career—it’s a privilege.

“I was really grateful and just so thankful to work at Goff,” she said. “Every day, I’m so lucky to come to school and work with the most professional, talented group of teachers.”

Her students wholeheartedly agree.

“You know, having her as a teacher has helped me grow, and I think that is really deserving,” Sahibzada added.

“I think she’s a very good teacher overall. And she definitely deserves it,” Cottrell echoed.

With her passion, dedication, and unwavering commitment to her students, Monica Barnes is truly making a difference. Congratulations to this week’s Top Teacher!
