Marylou Whitney, Hendrickson leave coveted $100M+ property to town of 800

FIRST ON 13: They’re celebrating tonight in the Town of Long Lake in Hamilton County.

The town found out tonight that the community of just 791 people will be the sole beneficiary of what could be the most lucrative land deal in the history of the Adirondacks.

NewsChannel 13 has learned that the will of the late John Hendrickson directs the state to sell Whitney Park on his behalf and give the proceeds to Long Lake.

Before Hendrickson passed away suddenly in August, he had listed it for sale for 180 million dollars. Considered a crown jewel of the Adirondacks, it includes 36-thousand acres,

22 lakes and ponds with 100 miles of shoreline,  and an Adirondack Great Camp once owned by Hendrickson’s wife, Marylou Whitney and her first husband, Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney.

The Town Board held a special meeting tonight to share the news that the town will be the beneficiary of the sale of Whitney Park and will be receiving a huge windfall.

Long Lake encompasses 450 square miles. Proceeds of the sale will likely be several times more than the town’s annual budget of roughly four million dollars. Supervisor Clay Arsenault calls the Hendrickson gift “one of the most significant events in the town’s history.”
