Troy man admits to sexual abuse; Prosecutors seek other child victims

A Troy man has admitted to sexual abuse, and prosecutors believe there may be more victims.

Michael Cardwell, 39, pleaded guilty in Rensselaer County Court. He also pleaded guilty in federal court to sexual exploitation of a child and possession of child sexual abuse materials, according to the Rensselaer County District Attorney’s Office.

Cardwell possessed photos of children engaged in sexual activity, according to prosecutors.
District Attorney Mary Pat Donnelly said they believe there are other child victims. Anyone who believes they may be a victim of Cardwell or know of a victim is asked to call 518-270-4040.

Cardwell is scheduled to be sentenced on May 27 and will receive up to 7 years in prison. That will run concurrently to whatever sentence he gets at the federal level.
