Two Catholic schools in Capital Region announce closure
All Saints Catholic Academy in Albany and Sacred Heart School in Troy are closing.
All Saints was in need of financial support and building repairs, according to a release from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany.
Low enrollment at Sacred Heart School in Troy and finances led to the closing, the Diocese said.
Their new plan to build on the strengths of each parish includes a closing of the school, they said.
Mater Christi School will stay pre-K through eighth grade, and Blessed Sacrament will become pre-K through fifth grade.
This comes after months of discussion over the future of the school.
“This is the result of a great deal of prayer, discussion, and input from various groups, including our very passionate parents and school community,” the Diocese said in a statement.
As NewsChannel 13 reported last month, community members came together with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany to discuss the future of the school. They called it “a difficult, but necessary decision.”
There are also plans to create a single school board for the Catholic schools in the city of Albany, school leaders said.
Staffing and transportation are still being worked out.
