Two people dead on fire in Bennington County

Two people dead on fire in Bennington County in the town of Sandgate.

Two people are dead and two others injured after a fire in Bennington County.

The Arlington Fire Department responded around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday to a report of a structure fire with entrapment at 1337 Chunks Brook Road in the town of Sandgate.

The property is near the New York and Vermont border and multiple fire departments from both states responded.

The first units were on scene within three minutes and confirmed that two people were trapped inside.

Firefighters began to attack the fire from the inside, but after the roof was showing signs of collapse, shifted to an outside attack until the scene was secure.

Vermont State Police said two deceased victims were found inside. An autopsy will be performed on Thursday to determine the cause of death. Their names will be released pending notification of next-of-kin.

Two other people were injured in the fire and were transported to a local hospital in Vermont before being transferred to burn units in New York, police said. A third person who lived in a different part of the residence was taken to a local hospital for treatment of injuries not related to the fire and subsequently released.

Members of the Vermont Department of Public Safety Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit are investigating the origin and cause of the fire. In addition, Vermont State Police detectives and troopers are assisting.
