U.S. attorney wants to hold apps, phone carriers accountable

U.S. Attorney John Sarcone III said he is considering suing online dating apps and cell phone companies for not doing enough to stop sexual predators for preying on children. "If Google could put algorithms in to monitor speech on the internet, to monitor speech on websites, those big companies can do the same," Sarcone said on Monday.

U.S. Attorney John Sarcone III said he is considering suing online dating apps and cell phone companies for not doing enough to stop sexual predators for preying on children.

“If Google could put algorithms in to monitor speech on the internet, to monitor speech on websites, those big companies can do the same,” Sarcone said on Monday.

His comments came during the question-and-answer session of a news conference to discuss the arrest of Devin Ravine. The 20-year-old man from Riverside, California is accused of exchanging sexually explicit messages with a 15-year-old Rensselaer County girl. The victim had told the FBI about the messages after a presentation the FBI put on in school about child online safety.

“This has got to stop. We cannot have FBI agents going all over to the schools, and then hopefully randomly somebody comes forward and we catch somebody,” he said.

A civil lawsuit is the only way to get these online companies’ attention, according to Sarcone.

“Drag one of these big companies into federal court, let them fight it and be humiliated publicly throughout this whole experience,” he said.

Sacorne said that social media companies and cell phone companies have algorithms that can monitor types of conversations containing explicit information.

He proceeded to read from the complaint in the Ravine case. “U want to rub your thighs and p**** on Facetime.”

“Algorithms can pick that up. They can program it. It may cost them billions of dollars to do, but I intend to force them to do it,” he said.

When asked about how such an algorithm would not catch conversations between two adults, he said the companies should be able to develop a process to figure out who are children.

Sarcone said the school districts should be teaching students how to be safe online, instead of the FBI coming to schools. He said he plans to meet with the New York State Education Department to bring this to their attention. He said this is better than some of the other stuff that is taught in school, which he objects to. He did not mention specifics.

“They should be educating children about sexting, and predators, and what to look out for,” he said.
