The victim of a fatal fire in Schenectady on Friday has been identified as a 70-year-old man. Fire broke out at 15 Brown St. at around 7 p.m. Responding firefighters saw heavy fire and smoke on the first floor of the two-family home. When they were preparing to enter the house, they heard an explosion from inside.

The victim, Wayne D. Cook, was found dead on the first floor. There was nobody home on the second floor.

There were no other injuries.

Firefighters found five oxygen cylinders and one small butane cylinder, which may have been the source of the explosion, Chief Don Mareno said.

The cause of death was determined to be smoke asphyxiation.

The preliminary cause is accidental.
