Volunteer Albany cemetery caretaker sidelined over health concerns

A local volunteer has big concerns over the continuity of maintenance care at an Albany cemetery.

Over the course of the past decade, the Evangelical Protestant Church Cemetery has gone from being abandoned, neglected and overgrown and to eventually restored to the beauty, relevance and dignity it deserves.

The man mostly responsible for the rebirth is Christopher White.

About a decade ago, realizing several relatives were buried here, he stopped by and found woeful neglect at the cemetery. The grass wasn’t being mowed, weeds were encroaching, overwhelming, and concealing the gravestones. Many of the gravestones had been toppled or broken.

In addition to taking care of the landscaping, White also happens to be a master gravestone repairman, restoring broken grave markers. Many of them belong to American military heroes.

White and his father have been coming here every week, during the summer growing season, along with a few others, making sure the cemetery remains in pristine condition.

White contacted NewsChannel 13 recently to say he won’t be able to take of this 4-acre cemetery any longer.

He says his father is now 84 years old.

Aside from that, White has been diagnosed with Stage 4 melanoma, he said.

White is hoping someone with spare time and a lawnmower, picks up the ball and runs with it.

He hopes someone out there shares his sentiment that people who have been laid to rest here deserve the dignity of an immaculate burial ground.
