Voorheesville graduate killed in Virginia shooting
A Voorheesville High School graduate has been killed in a shooting in Virginia.
James Lawitz, 30, was shot to death in the yard of a home on the 100 block of South Cedar Avenue in Henrico on Sept. 15 just after 11:30 a.m., police said.
Troy Vincent Charran Jr. 18, also of Henrico, has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in a felony.
Lawitz attended Albany public schools, Bishop McGinn High and graduated from Voorheesville. He excelled in sports, especially football, according to his obituary.
Lawitz graduated from Hudson Valley Community College and from Avila College, earning a degree in kinesiology. He worked served as an assistant football coach at Greensboro College and the University at Albany. He also worked as a personal trainer.
Lawitz was planning to become a firefighter, having recently passed exams and was interviewing for a position with a local department, his obituary went on to say.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 25 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Daniel Keenan Funeral Home in Albany. A funeral service will take place on Thursday, Sept. 26 at the funeral home.
