Washington County police chief still off the job, but will stop getting paid

A Washington County police chief, who is still employed eight months after a domestic-related incident, has now been put on unpaid leave.

Cambridge-Greenwich Police Chief Robert Danko was arrested last July after police said he held a woman he knew against her will. Danko pleaded guilty in December to the lesser charge of disorderly conduct, which is a violation.

Danko was put on paid leave after his arrest. Cambridge Mayor Carman Bogle tells NewsChannel 13 that the Village Board on Wednesday voted to place Danko on unpaid leave until he can resume his duties as a police officer.

Danko has collected nearly $53,000 in salary during the period of his leave. There was also nearly $12,000 in health benefits and $15,000 in taxpayer-funded contributions to a retirement plan, according to payroll records. The costs are shared equally between Cambridge and Greenwich.

Danko cannot buy possess or carry a gun because of a protective order against him.

Bogle said she could not comment further on the matter because of personnel issue.
