Water main break on Hoosick Street leads to major disruptions
TROY, N.Y. (WNYT) – A water main break in Troy Sunday led to one lane closed on Hoosick Street at 17th Street.
Crews were working all day Sunday to try to fix the break.
Dunkin Donuts, Popeyes, and Dominos on Hoosick Street were forced to close early Sunday as a result of the break.
The water main break also left about 16 households in the area without water, leaving neighbors frustrated.
“Well, I tried to turn on the shower and then there was no water. And then our friend drove down the street and noticed there was some construction,” said some local residents.
Another resident said the water shut off as he was showering.
“We just got back from practice at like 12:00 and I was sweating like crazy and then the water shut off on us,” said one neighbor.
Russ Reeves is an engineer for the City of Troy and told NewsChannel 13 how he believes the pipe burst.
“Today we had a 16-inch sanitary sewer, it fractured in about four locations, and at the same time, we had a water main break. That section of pipe ruptured. The valve also cracked,” Reeves said.
Reeves said he believes the break was due to old infrastructure.
“This pipe has aged, it’s corroded, and it’s fatigued from cycling and loading from traffic and so forth,” said Reeves.
Reeves also said once the water comes back, everyone affected will have a boil water advisory in effect for a couple days. This means they must boil water before using it.
Mayor Mantello told NewsChannel 13 she expects crews to be working here throughout the night to fix the break.
